About us

We met almost 7 years ago at orientation for graduate school at the University of Miami, Rosenstiel School of Marine and Atmospheric Science.  Remy was starting his Ph.D and Jenn starting her masters.  During this time we traveled some and talked some more about doing a big, round-the-world-trip once grad school was finished.

My adventure streak is something that built over the years.  It started with a trip to Belize to learn to scuba dive followed by a short backpacking trip around part of Europe after graduating high school.  After that I moved to the opposite side of the country, San Diego, to pursue a degree in marine biology.  After finishing undergrad I joined the Peace Corps and moved to the Philippines.  That is when I really had my eyes opened to experiencing another culture and seeing the sites of the world.  That is when the adventure streak became permanent and much of my daydreams were occupied with thoughts of my next adventure.

My parents would take my brother and I traveling when we were younger (they were brave, those two).  Every opportunity to travel has been a positive experience for me, and I was fortunate enough to incorporate traveling with my education.

Travel Philosophy

We are budget, foodie, adventure, outdoors & wildlife travelers.  What does that mean, and how does it influence the travel?

Budget - We try to keep costs down as much as possible.  We aren't so tight that we will eat noodles and stay inside all day, but we will forgo the souvenirs, fancy hotels, and expensive restaurants.  If there are no cheap hotels, we will sleep outside if necessary (and if the area is safe), but mostly we stay in hostel dorm beds or camp.  We prefer street food to restaurants and cook many of our own meals.  We prefer grocery store beers to bar beers.

Foodie - Food is one of our main expenses because we love to eat local, fresh, healthy, and tasty food.  We often end up carrying a bag of groceries (seasonal fruit, spices, snacks) in case we can't find a good restaurant, we are stuck in the boonies, or restaurants are too pricey.

Adventure - We would rather spend our time and money on adventures instead of museums and exhibitions.  With a budget-conscious mentality, these 'adventures' usually consist of hiking and camping.  We favor do-it-yourself traveling over guided tours.

Outdoors & Wildlife - We choose most places to visit based on what kind of vistas we'll see or animals we might encounter.  We love photography (even if we're mediocre at it), and most of our pictures are outdoors and wildlife.

When these interests are all added together, the sum is a travel philosophy that emphasizes beautiful places, fresh air, delicious food, and budget travel.

The Plan

It took a long time, but we finally decided on the countries that we want to visit.  There is a general timeline, but all of it is flexible.  As of right now we just have tickets to fly to France and we will book the rest as we move.  We each have pillars, things we must do on this trip, the rest is open to change.
